Minutes, 1777-1788

Minutes of the committee appointed by Wilmington Monthly Meeting in 8mo 1777 to keep a record of cases of suffering of members for their observance of the peace testimony during the Revolutionary War. The minutes record financial and material losses as well as the circumstances of the imprisonment of Jehu Hollingsworth in the Lancaster jail. The first volume also contains the minutes of an earlier committee, the Committee of Advise in Sufferings Cases &c., 1756-1761, concerning fines on account of the militia law, and also a copy of a letter from William Tuke of York, England, concerning the death of John Woolman, 1772.

Wilmington Monthly Meeting was established in 1750 by Chester [Concord] Quarterly Meeting out of Kennett Monthly Meeting (PA). After the Hicksite Separation of 1827, there were two monthly meetings at Wilmington. The Hicksite, or West Street, meeting merged with the Orthodox, or Harrison Street, meeting in 1945, forming a united monthly meeting under the two Concord Quarterly Meetings.
